Charge Air Cooler (CAC), or often called intercooler, is a device that functions as a heat exchanger to cool air that has been compressed by a turbocharger or supercharger before entering the engine combustion chamber.
Here are the main functions of the Charge Air Cooler:
A. Increase Air Density: The process of air compression by the turbocharger produces hot air. Hot air has a lower density than cold air. By compressing cold air, the CAC increases the density of the air entering the combustion chamber. Denser air contains more oxygen per unit volume, resulting in more efficient combustion.
B. Reduce Intake Air Temperature: High air temperatures can cause problems such as detonation (knocking) in the engine, which can damage engine components. The CAC significantly reduces the temperature of the air entering the combustion chamber, creating safer and more controlled combustion conditions.
C. Increase Combustion Efficiency: Cooler and denser air allows for more complete combustion of fuel. This results in greater power from the same amount of fuel, thereby increasing overall fuel efficiency.
D. Improved Engine Performance: With more efficient combustion, the engine can produce more power and torque. This is especially important in applications where high performance is required, such as in turbocharged vehicles.
E. Reduced Exhaust Emissions: More complete combustion results in fewer harmful exhaust emissions because more fuel is burned optimally.
